I to purchase an insurance policy my 8 yr American Warmblood gelding. I major medical surgical loss of use, mortality insurance. Does good policies in USA? - Hi Nikki, Horse insurance that you are describing can be very costly and most that I have researched are quite limited in scope. And while you are not intested in mortality insurance, my only experience was with that type, and I learned to regret doing that. One must thoroughly research each company and their requirements to issue a policy. You have some good links already to do that, but each carrier covers different things, with a wide variety of coverage. In addition, the horse must have a thorough veterinary exam, and if any hidden conditions emerge, they may be deemed uninsurable. My veterinarian suggested, when I was considering renewal on an older horse, was to put money aside each month to cover any routine care. Once a horse develops certain conditions, that particular condition is generally excluded upon renewal. I followed his sage advice. While one may not be able to raise the huge amount of money that some surgeries may require, it can be a roll of the dice if a horse does become injured or ill which requires catastropic veterinary care. It is a quandry for sure.
