- the other three posters are correct. you can quit cold turkey. the hardest part is deciding you want to quit. i smoked for 24 years, . when i asked myself why i was a slave to tobacco i could not give a good answer. i burned myself, i burned my son {accidently when he suddenly crawled up into my lap. i ruined fishing trips for lack of a light for my cigarett. i smelled bad, my food did not taste good. so i decided i would quit. the method you choose is your choice. i chose to not light the first one of the new pack. every time the urge hit i would tell me, not now, next time. and the same the next time. i distracted my attention when the urge came. i did not carry a lighter, i stayed where i usually did not smoke. i did not tell me, "i wish i had a cigarette. ". your fear of it being hard is making it harder than it is. never say i can't. say i can. you can and you will when you decide you want to. not until then. you will smell better, food will taste better, you will breathe easier, no more smoker's hacking cough in the mornings. if you have coffee with a morning smoke. drink tea instead, do not go to the places you usually smoke. each day will be easier after the first one. little by little you will get rid of the addiction. you can do it. i know you can, but only when you decide you really want to quit
