Why did Blue Cross Say I can not buy medical insurance for my daughter who is in therapy for anxiety?
My husband might be laid - off soon. After COBRA runs - out, we'd need to buy medical insurance. I called Blue Cross for a quote and they said they would not provide ANY medical coverage for my 14 - year old daughter who sees a psychiatrist for anxiety and who takes prescription medicine for the anxiety. Are there any insurance companies who will cover her for medical not just the therapy, but for all medical ? I am stunned- contact a local broker

- She has what they call preexisting conditions. You will have a hard time finding coverage for her unless you can get her into a group policy. Even if you find a policy that will cover hr be aware that they might put in a rider exempting preexisting conditions because they will connect everything they can to them. For example my mother injured her back and later with a new insurance policy she injured her ankle and they claimed it was because of her back. Good Luck
- They are not saying you can not buy it - they're telling you they will not cover her. Unless you live in a guaranteed issue state - which is, apparently not - they're not going to sell you a policy where you pay a couple hundred a month, and they pay out a guaranteed double that, IF nothing else goes wrong, every month. They'd go broke, if they did. Because her anxiety is severe enough to need medication, she's at a much higher risk for suicide - which usually entails m ive medical expenses to save her. She's not insurable, now, EVER, on a decent private policy. You can still buy a limited coverage policy for her - no psychiatric, no prescriptions, two doctor visits a year, up to $10, 000 if she needs surgery crap coverage, OR, she's going to need to get her coverage through a group plan. Hubby will have 18 months after getting laid off, to find another job with benefits. YOU could also look for work, with benefits
- And people state we do not need health care reform. Under your husbands group policy they cover most everything with limitations. But when someone loses a job, cobra runs out and if they can not find another job with medical insurance, which a lot of employers do not provide then you are stuck finding your own insurance which if you have a pre - existing condition will bar you from buying. hopefully he does not get laid off, but if he does, make sure you continue with the cobra even though it will be pricey, since your daughter will continue with the same coverage as before. and hopefully it does not run out and either you or your husband gets another job with medical. good luck
