How do I know if I should have a diabetes check? I have no medical insurance and want a home method of check?
- What would be the purpose, dear lady? You could not then write up your own prescriptions for any medications that you might need, and it would not 'swing any lead' with insurance companies. Legally, a diagnosis can only be made by a practising medical doctor. You could, however, check your blood sugar levels at home to see if these would raise your awareness. or even indicate to yourself that you needed to see a doctor with the purpose of getting the official tests done. I am not sure how much a glucometer the blood testing machine would cost you in the United States, but the test strips cost about $1. 00 each. These strips can only be used once, before they need to be thrown away. If you do intend keeping an eye on your blood sugar glucose levels, the best time for you to test would be when you first get up in the morning, prior to you eating or drinking. unless you have just water. Ideally, your blood sugar level should be between 70 and 99 mg / dL. If you find it higher, it may well be worthy you sounding out your doctor to see if s / he feels that you require further testing. Between 100 and 125 mg / dL MAY be indicative of pre - diabetes, and above 126 mg / dL on two or more occasions would indicate that you DO need to see your doctor. I wish you the very best of luck, dear lady, for a long, happy, healthy life
- If diabetes runs in your family, you should be checked. Or if you think you have symptoms, you should be checked. It is usually part of a yearly physical exam. To be tested for free without insurance - call to the different drug stores in your area. Walgreen's, for example, just had free testing for diabetes in different stores. Check the other ones if they do not have it. Also, go to the website below. The National Kidney Foundation is offering free screenings for kidney disease which includes a test for diabetes also - it's the #1 cause of kidney failure
